Students from Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School were the highlight of the Center’s Juneteenth activity. They sang a few songs and played a variety of percussion instruments. Juneteenth is a word that comes from the words June and nine-teen. June 19, 1865 is the day that the news that slaves were now freed by the Emancipation Proclamation reached Galveston, Texas, over two years since the proclamation’s announcement in 1863.
